Why counterfeits are so common in Thailand
TENGA is Japan's best-selling personal wellness brand and is well-known across Asia. That popularity makes it a prime target for counterfeit manufacturers in China and elsewhere who produce imitations at a fraction of the cost and sell them through unregulated channels.
Because TENGA is not sold in Thai physical stores and the real product can only be bought online through an authorised retailer, buyers who don't know this often turn to wherever they can find it — Shopee, Lazada, Facebook, Line — where counterfeits are mixed in with other listings.
Warning signs of a fake TENGA
1. The price is too low
Genuine TENGA prices are consistent. If something is significantly cheaper than these, it is fake:
- Cup Series: ฿499–฿599 each
- Spinner: ฿1,390–฿1,490
- Flex Series: ฿2,190
- Flip Zero: ฿3,990
- Flip EV: ฿7,900
Fakes are often listed at ฿150–฿350 for cups, or ฿500–฿900 for what's claimed to be a Spinner. These prices indicate a counterfeit.
2. It's sold on a Thai marketplace with no brand verification
Shopee Thailand, Lazada Thailand, and similar platforms allow any seller to list products without verifying authenticity. TENGA has no official verified store on these platforms in Thailand. Any TENGA listing on Shopee or Lazada is from an unverified third party.
The same applies to Facebook Marketplace, Line Shopping, and Instagram shops — these platforms have no mechanism to verify product authenticity.
3. The packaging quality is off
Genuine TENGA packaging is high quality — precise printing, sharp text, consistent colour. Counterfeits often have:
- Slightly blurred or uneven text
- Colours that are a shade off from the real product
- Plastic wrap that doesn't sit flush against the packaging
- A missing or fake-looking holographic authenticity sticker
- Inaccurate or translated-sounding English (genuine TENGA uses careful English copywriting)
If you have a genuine TENGA next to a fake, the difference is immediately obvious. If you've never seen the real thing, it's harder to tell — which is why buying from an authorised source is the safest approach.
4. The inner sleeve material feels wrong
Real TENGA inner sleeves are made from a soft, body-safe elastomer material with a specific feel — slightly tacky in a controlled way, never rough or sticky-unpleasant. Counterfeit sleeves often feel:
- More rubbery or stiffer
- Tackier in an unpleasant way (sticks to itself)
- Notably different in texture or smell
- Less detailed in the internal pattern
If your product arrived and the inner sleeve doesn't feel like quality material, that's a strong indicator of a fake.
5. The seller has no provenance
