iroha guide
Cleaning, charging and storage
How to look after your iroha, based on the official manuals: how to wash it, which lubricant to use, charging and batteries, and storing it cleanly and privately.
Last updated
Looking after your iroha properly keeps it clean, makes it last, and keeps the silicone soft. This guide brings together the care instructions from iroha's official manuals in one place. Read it once and it applies to every model.
Clean it before and after every use
Wash it before first use and after every use. It only takes a minute.
- Always switch it off first.
- Rinse in cool or lukewarm water, never hot.
- Use a mild, pH-neutral soap and work it gently over the surface.
- Rinse off all the soap, then pat dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Let it dry completely before you put it away.
Avoid: alcohol, strongly acidic or alkaline cleaners, thinners, and soaking in hot or cold water for long periods. On battery models, never open the battery cap while washing.
Water: how waterproof is it?
Current iroha models are waterproof to a depth of 50 cm, so rinsing under the tap is no problem and the bath or shower is fine. A few things to keep in mind:
- Avoid strong jets of water on the device and anything deeper than 50 cm.
- Avoid sea water or salt water.
- Charging cables aren't waterproof, and neither is the Mai Toki charging base. Wipe those with a damp cloth only.
- The Sakura and Yuki we stock are the current Nadeshiko Pink edition, waterproof to 50 cm like the rest of the range. (An older 2011 version was splash-resistant only, so if you bought one elsewhere years ago, check its manual.)
Lubricant: water-based only
This is the most important rule. iroha is compatible with water-based lubricants only. Silicone-based lubricants, massage oils and baby oil can damage, discolour or deform the silicone, and iroha says using them voids the warranty.
Changing batteries: Stick, Zen and Rin Akane
- iroha Stick takes one AAA battery and runs for about 5 hours at full power.
- iroha Zen and Rin Akane take two AAA batteries and run for about 4 hours. The manuals recommend alkaline batteries.
When changing batteries, make sure your hands and the device are completely dry, and close the cap firmly every time so it stays waterproof. If the waterproof seal gets dirty, wipe it with a dry cloth. If you won't use it for a while, take the batteries out.
Charging: Rin+, Sakura, Yuki and Mai Toki
| Model | How it charges | Charge time | Run time |
|---|---|---|---|
| iroha Rin+ | Magnetic USB cable attached to the device | about 120 minutes | about 90 minutes |
| iroha Sakura / Yuki | Placed on a magnetic charging terminal | about 120 minutes | about 90 minutes |
| iroha Mai Toki | On its charging base, or by cable | about 90 minutes | about 60 minutes |
Run times are measured at full power. At lower settings it will last longer.
Good to know
- There's no plug in the box. Use a USB port or a 5V 1A USB adapter.
- Use the cable that came with your product. The Sakura and Yuki cable doesn't work with other models.
- Dry the device before every charge.
- The magnetic charging contact on the device won't cause a shock if it gets wet, but the cable itself must always stay dry.
- Keep the cable's magnets away from phones and bank cards.
- If you won't use it for a while, give it a full charge at least every six months to look after the battery.
Storage
- Keep it somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight and away from heat and humidity.
- Switch it off before putting it away.
- Don't store it touching other silicone items, as the surfaces can stick together or be damaged.
- Keep it away from perfume, insect repellent, solvents and oil-based products.
- Use the cover that came with it. Stick has a cap over the tip, and Mai Toki comes with a storage cover.
Storing it privately: iroha boxes are neat enough to use as storage, or you can keep it in a fabric pouch in a drawer. Battery models have the added bonus of no charging cable left out.
Safety notes from the manuals
- Don't use it on the same spot for more than 15 minutes.
- Don't share it with others, for hygiene.
- If you have a pacemaker, are pregnant or are receiving medical treatment, talk to your doctor before use.

Common questions
Can I use soap?
Yes. The iroha manuals recommend a mild, pH-neutral soap with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid alcohol and strongly acidic or alkaline cleaners.
Which lubricants can I use?
Water-based lubricants only. Silicone-based lubricants, massage oils and baby oil can damage, discolour or deform the silicone.
Can I charge it with my phone charger?
Rechargeable models charge at 5V 1A through the USB cable in the box. There's no plug included, so a computer's USB port or a USB adapter you already have will work. Cables aren't interchangeable across every model, so use the one that came with your product.
